7 Steps to Personal
Financial Success
Make 2003 Financially Better Than 2002
Are you feeling the credit pinch? Are you already dreading the day the
credit card bills carrying holiday gift costs land in your mailbox?
Perhaps you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. But you
also need to do something! There are some steps you can take immediately
to get yourself on a straighter financial course for 2003. Among them:
- Vow that 2003 will mark the end of
carrying credit card balances. That alone will help you and your
family spend one-third less.
- Figure out exactly how much money
you have and how much you owe. Write down how much money you hope to
have saved one year down the road, five years down the road and 10 years
down the road.
- Write down everything your family
spent money on in the last month. Agree as a family what you can
live without next month. Decide what changes can you make in your
lifestyles to help reach your goals. Also brainstorm about ways to
increase income. Can someone finagle a raise? Maybe you can temporarily
rent out a room or take on second jobs.
- Write down the names of your
telephone, gas and electric companies; water company; homeowners
insurance and car insurance companies; and banks. Designate one
adult who will call each of the companies on the list. Then determine
whether you can cut your cost by dealing with another highly rated
company, getting on another lower-cost plan with your existing company
or participating in any special programs.
- As you find more money becoming
available, use it to pay off your credit card bills first. Pay down
the card with the highest interest rate firest.
- Start a regular savings plan by
building an emergency cash fund. Then invest regularly, if possible,
in your IRA or 401(k) plan.
- Check your insurance, durable power
of attorney, wills and estate plans. Determine what needs to be
updated.
Make your goals to get out of debt and
get ahead financially a family-wide mission. Then maintain a positive,
upbeat attitude. It will happen.
